Growing up as the middle child means having someone to look up to and someone else to look down on you. You get to be you and do you without a lot of people saying anything about it. For one, you can go unnoticed at most of your family’s gatherings. A study showed that the middle sibling is more apt to develop conditions like: Obsessive compulsive disorder. Events such as starting school bring children this age into regular contact with the larger world. Being a middle child isn’t really that bad. Though Alfred Adler made some astounding statements for his time, researchers today still study the relationship of the middle child and the birth order. As a result, middle-born children grow up feeling overlooked and undervalued ( Miller, 2018 ). This is because parents are often hypothesised to place more attention on the oldest and youngest children ( Dodgson, 2017 ). Having independence from family becomes more important now. Middle child syndrome is a theory that middle-born children feel neglected in comparison to the oldest and youngest children. By this time, children can dress themselves, catch a ball more easily using only their hands, and tie their shoes.
